About Solid Brass Door Knobs

Our knobs are made from 100% solid brass, with round and oval faces, sculpted fluted and reeded forms, and rosewood faces on the Chelsea and Cotswold. Use the Browse by Grip cards or the filters to narrow the collection, then choose a finish and configure the set on its product page.

What's in a set. Passage, privacy and keyed sets include two matching knobs for both sides of one door, plus the latch or lock and fixing hardware for the function selected. Dummy options are fixed and do not include a latch: Double-Sided Pair (1 Door) provides knobs for both sides of one door, while Single-Sided Pair (2 Doors) provides one single-sided knob for each of two doors.

Functions. Knob sets come in the same functions as our handles:

  • Passage: for doors that don't lock.
  • Privacy (Pin Lock or Keyless Turnlock): for bathrooms and bedrooms.
  • Keyed Lock: for rooms that need key access from outside.
  • Dummy: for fixed, non-latching doors.

Choices vary slightly by design, and each product page shows exactly what that knob offers.

Rosettes and fit. Most of our knobs sit on a round rosette; the Emsbury is also offered with a square rosette, and the Savoy knobs have an oval face and rosette. Rosettes are sized to cover a standard 2 1/8" bore hole on standard U.S. door preparation. Some designs are handed and some offer more than one backset; the product page asks only for the choices that apply to that knob.

Frequently asked questions

What comes with a knob set?

Passage, privacy and keyed sets include two matching knobs for both sides of one door, plus the latch or lock and the fixing hardware for the function you choose. Keyed sets also include keys.

Dummy options are fixed and have no latch or lock. The Double-Sided Pair (1 Door) provides knobs for both sides of one door; the Single-Sided Pair (2 Doors) provides one single-sided knob for each of two doors.

Should I choose a knob or a handle?

Both are sold as complete sets in passage, privacy, keyed and dummy functions, so the choice is mostly about the look and feel you want at the door.

Can I lock a knob from the inside without a key?

Yes, choose a privacy function. Pin Lock uses a small push pin on the rosette and Keyless Turnlock uses a thumbturn; both have an emergency release on the outside. Most knob designs offer both.

How do dummy knob pairs work?

Dummy knobs are fixed and don't turn or latch.

  • Double-Sided Pair (1 Door): knobs for both sides of one door. On some designs it is handed, and the product page asks for Left or Right Hand.
  • Single-Sided Pair (2 Doors): one single-sided knob for each of two doors; it is non-handed.
Do I need to choose left or right hand?

Only for handed designs; the product page shows a Handing option when it applies. Handing is always judged from the outside of the door, which for a room is usually the hallway side. Face the closed door: hinges on the left mean Left Hand, hinges on the right mean Right Hand, whichever way the door swings.

What backset do I need?

Backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the bore hole; match your existing door preparation. 2 3/8" (60 mm) is the standard backset, and some designs also offer 2 3/4" (70 mm), shown as a Backset choice on the product page when available. Keyed sets use a mortise lock body with its own door preparation.

Can I use a keyed knob on an exterior door?

Keyed knob sets are intended for interior rooms where key access is useful. They aren't a substitute for a dedicated high-security deadbolt or primary exterior security hardware. For any exterior-facing door, check fit, exposure and lock requirements with your installer or locksmith. A qualified locksmith can rekey or replace the key cylinder.

Will my knobs match my other hardware?

Many finish names appear across our handles, knobs, hinges and door stops. The same finish name doesn't guarantee an identical tone across different products or suppliers, so contact us before ordering if an exact match matters.
